This Japanese term is used to describe flat-chested girls. Other similar terms include “Hinnyu (貧乳)” and “DFC (Deliciously Flat Chest)”. It is also interesting to note that there are generally two types of pettanko characters in anime.

Typically, pettanko characters get teased for being flat-chested, and would even demonstrate an inferiority complex in that aspect when surrounded by their busty companions. Andou Mahoro (Mahoromatic), Lina Inverse (Slayers), Louise Françoise Le Blanc de La Vallière (Zero no Tsukaima) are good examples of such characters who resent the size of their chest.

Then there are another type of pettanko who are actually quite proud of being flat-chested and make their case by saying small breast would never sag. The best example that I can think of is definitely Konata (Lucky☆Star) who believes pettanko are quite valuable.

So what is your preference? Do you prefer your 2D girls to be pettanko or all of them to have large oppais?

Dojikko ドジっ子 is a term used to described kawaii anime girls that tend to be clumsy and sometimes even making mistakes that hurt themselves (e.g. tripping over or walking into lamposts) or even others (e.g. spilling tea) on their friends).

Two characters that immediately comes to mind would be Asahina Mikuru (朝比奈 みくる) from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (涼宮ハルヒの憂鬱) and Takara Miyuki (高良 みゆき) from Lucky☆Star (らき☆すた).

Actually the word Tsundere ツンデレ is derived from a longer phrase: Tsuntsun Deredere ツンツンデレデレ, where Tsuntsun means aloof, mean or a cold attitude towards others, while Deredere means a sweet affection towards others.

Hence, a tsundere character (whom is usually a girl) would initially displays an ill-tempered or even insulting/violent behavior towards the person she likes, but then later at times displays a more loving, gentle side of themselves over time. In certain situations, it might be that the girl behaves coldly towards to the person when in front of others, but becomes much nicer when the couple are alone.

There are many popular anime/manga characters that have the tsundere characteristics. Off the top of my hand, I can think of Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melanchory of Suzumiya Haruhi), Asuka Langley Soryu (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Hiiragi Kagami (Lucky Star), Louise (Zero no Tsukaima), Suiseiseki (Rozen Maiden), and Shana (Shakugan no Shana).

So do you like Tsundere characters? I do enjoy them because they tend to help spice up the anime/manga by making it difficult for the male protagonists to successfully win their hearts.

According to this news report from Mainichi Mantan, the anime franchise is estimated to have brought over 1 billion yen! (Starting from when the town was first featured on the anime back in 2007.)
