Keanu Reeves Still Keen on Filming Live-Action Cowboy Bebop

Its been more than a year since we last heard any news about the live-action movie adaptation of Cowboy Bebop, and its seems like Keanu Reeves is still intent on being Spike Spiegel.

During an interview with MTV News, the actor shared that he is still “knocking on that door, but it has not opened”. The main obstacle that stands between him realising the movie is a potentially high budget (half a billion dollars) that was revealed back in Sep 2009 when the draft script was completed.

Keanu Reeves: Live-Action Cowboy Bebop Script Being Rewritten

Its been quite a while since we heard anything on the live-action Cowboy Bebop movie starring Keanu Reeves. In the latest update, the star of the movie Keanu Reeves revealed that progress is slow because the script for the movie is now being re-written.

During a press event for The Private Lives of Pippa Lee film, he said:

There’s a draft of the script, but the writer did such a great job [that] in order to make the movie, you would need half a billion dollars.

So obviously its not possible for the studio and they are doing a rewrite. Reeves had added that the producers are “just trying to pull it back” in scope, and “the only challenge was to make a satisfying western narrative.”

I think its a good decision to rewrite the script and scale it down. I’m sure the studio wouldn’t want to spend half a billion and realise that they have made a terrible adaption that no one want to watch. But having said that, I’m really looking forward to this movie!!

Cowboy Bebop Live-Action Movie Confirmed: Keanu Reeves As Spike Speigel

Sunrise has officially announced plans for a live-action film adaptation of Cowboy Bebop and Keanu Reeves has been confirmed to play the role of Spike Speigel.

Joshua Long is acting as a production supervisor. The associate producers are Sunrise President Kenji Uchida, the original Cowboy Bebop director Shinichiro Watanabe, and the original series script supervisor Keiko Nobumoto.

The Sunrise studio itself and Masahiko Minami (former Sunrise producer and BONES studio co-founder) are both acting as production consultants.

Cowboy Bebop is my favorite anime series of all time. I really hope Hollywood can make a good adaptation out of it.

Cowboy Bebop Live-Action Movie Adaptation

Word is in from ANN that a live-action movie adapatation of Cowboy Bebop is being produced by Fox.

The adaptation is currently handled by film producer Erwin Stoff (The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly) and he promises “a real degree of faithfulness”.

I just don’t understand why Japanese animation companies are allowing Hollywood to destroy all our favorite classics by allowing them to produce movie adaptations.

What those companies should be doing instead is to follow what Gainax is doing and produce epic remastered releases like the latest Evangelion movies.
