Today's Japan Photo: Japan's Luckiest Man for 2013

For Today’s Japan Photo, we take a look at these 3 men who will be known as the luckiest men in Japan for 2013.

Its not because they won the lottery but they took part in a special “Lucky Men Race”, which is held annually on 10 Jan 2012 a tthe Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyougo Prefecture.

This special race had begun during the Edo Period, where participants gather in front of the shrine’s main gate before 6 am on the 10th of January. At 6 am, the shrine’s drum sounds, the gates are opened, and the assembled crowd sprints perilously 230 meters to the main hall. The top three finishers are given the title of “Lucky Men,” and of those three the champion is known as the “Luckiest Man.”
