Today’s Japan Photo: Daibutsu Spring Cleaning

Even the revered Buddha statue needs a nice spring-cleaning once in a while. For Today’s Japan Photo, we travel to Nara Prefecture to visit the famous Todai-ji (東大寺) temple that houses the world’s largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana, known in Japanese simply as Daibutsu (大仏).

In the photo, we can see see the temple monks dressed in white, performing spring cleaning in preparation for the upcoming Obon. Obon is an annual Buddhist event for commemorating one’s ancestors.
