Today’s Japan Photo: Mitama Matsuri 御霊まつり

For Today’s Japan Photo, we participate in one of Tokyo’s most beloved festivals, the Mitama Matsuri (御霊まつり) that is held every July at the Yasukuni Shrine to pay homage to the souls of the departed.

I think its is one of the most beautiful Japanese festival with the entrance to the shrine illuminated with over 30,000 lanterns placed by locals in honor of their deceased friends and loved ones. Then there is the Aomori Nebuta float that is featured on one of the days of the festival.
