Back in May, we heard news that the authorities were considering to reopen the “Pedestrian Paradise” in Akihabara. Finally two years and a half years after the infamous dark stabbing incident, the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and the Public Safety Committee have announced that Akihabara will be closing the area to vehicles on Sundays with effect from 23 Jan 2011.
The area will be open for pedestrians between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. and be patrolled by local residents and business owners alongside police. Fifty extra security cameras have also been installed around the area.

I think its a great move by the local authorities and I’m sure it will bring more vibrancy back to the neighborhood. Now cosplayers can once again freely roam the street and we can all forget about the unfortunate incident.
