The latest issue 20 of Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has a notice from the editorial department, whereby the editors are requesting fans to cease the uploading of scans from their manga.
And here’s what the editor has said:
To all our readers -
There are now many people unjustly posting copies of manga on the internet. These unjust copies are inconsistent with mangakas’ feelings. They are also distorting the authors’ intentions of “I want the work to be read this way”. The actions of posting these unjust copies on the net, into which the mangakas have poured their hearts, are not only hurting mangakas in real life but are also against the law, even if done in a light-hearted manner. Every time we discover such “unjust copies”, we talk to the mangaka and consider every possible countermeasure. But the number of inconsiderate people is great, and at present we cannot deal with all of them. We have a request for all our readers. The unjust internet copies are deeply hurting the manga culture, mangakas’ rights, and even mangakas’ souls. Please understand once again that all of that is against the law. Also, the mangakas and Shueisha will severely deal with any unjust copies found on the internet. We ask that our readers please continue to support us.

Its ironic that we would have been able to find out about this piece of new if no one had scanned this issue of Shounen Jump and uploaded it onto the internet. XD
Although I understand where they are coming from. Hopefully, that won’t happen>.> It would be sad, if this happens though.
I think they get more exposure for their manga if it was released online. I’m sure many people would buy the manga, it’s just that most manga lover’s overseas can’t read Japanese.
I wouldst mind if they stopped the scans only if they also began to translate their very own creations, most of the time the ones who benefit from scans are not the ones who have access to the material but the ones in other countries who cant read Japanese and cant buy the magazines
Irony is ironic.
I’m with tabetaii in that there is generally more exposure to a wider audience. I doubt some of the niche titles would be as popular as they were and get translated over to America or Europe had it not been for scans. Heck, it would be pretty hard for them to make any headway in other countries had it not been for scanners’ interest in bringing over the manga in their own language. I certainly would not have heard of manga or bought books if it hadn’t been for sites such as onemanga, mangastream, or mangafox.
Yeah I do agree with your point as well. I would be happy to purchase a subscription if they had one for the international Engilsh-speaking community as well.
I would have never heard of many titles if it wasn’t for the scans. But I understand where they are coming from… I would also purchase if in English
I understand where they’re coming from, unfortunately the mangas that do come to my country which are subbed by VIZ have their storylines altered to the extent that the cultural heritage of the stories are destroyed, where one girl never has called the main character by his first name in the entire series, but by his family name with a respectful suffix and in the english versions calls him by his first name like it is nothing.
Del Ray knows how to sub mangas, they leave the respect suffixes, name order and cultural references within the stories, they also include colored pages, another thing that VIZ leaves out.
Until VIZ ups the quality of their translations i refuse to support them any longer.
I think they need to make a english shonen jump (Sort of like Viz medias) but that releases chapters where the japanese shonen jump is up to and at the same rate
