For Today’s Japan Photo series, we shall taste one of Japan’s most popular and convenient food – the Onigiri 御握り.

As we see in anime and Japanese drama, onigiri is a very convenient food that can be brought to work, school or even when you travel. I’ve tried one that contained salted salmon before and it tasted really yummy. But somehow its so small that I need to eat a couple to be full ^^
Onigiri (御握り; おにぎり), also known as omusubi (御結び; おむすび?) or rice ball, is a Japanese food made from white rice formed into triangular or oval shapes and often wrapped in nori (seaweed). Traditionally, an onigiri is filled with pickled ume (umeboshi), salted salmon, katsuobushi, kombu, tarako, or any other salty or sour ingredient as a natural preservative. Because of the popularity of onigiri in Japan, most convenience stores there stock onigiri with various fillings and flavors. There are even specialized shops whose only products are onigiri for take out.

Onigiri. No way to live without these while in Japan. It’s a Japanese staple food that hardly anyone in the U.S. has ever heard of.
