Today’s Japan Photo: Himeji Castle 姫路城

For Today’s Japan photo series, we will be take a break from Japanese celebration and will be looking at a lovely historical monuments – Himeji Castle [姫路城].

This photo was uploaded onto flickr by user show and tell. Although the photo is taken quite far away from the castle, I love the Sakura blossoms which frames the photo.

A little more information on Himeji Castle [姫路城]:

Himeji Castle [姫路城] was originally built in 1346, and is a flatland-mountain Japanese castle complex located in Himeji in Hyōgo Prefecture and comprising 83 wooden buildings. It is occasionally known as Hakurojyo or Shirasagijyo (“White Heron Castle”) because of its brilliant white exterior.

It was registered as the first Japanese National Cultural Treasure by UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Japanese National Cultural Treasure in December, 1993. Along with Matsumoto Castle and Kumamoto Castle, it is one of Japan’s “Three Famous Castles”, and is the most visited castle in Japan.
