Makoto Shinkai Working On New Anime Movie

Makoto Shinkai [新海誠], the director behind Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, and 5 Centimeters Per Second has announced on his website that he is now working on a new anime project.

Here’s the short update which is written by Makoto Shinkai, and the translation in English:

【新作アニメーション制作のお知らせ】
[New anime in the works]

いま、僕たちのスタジオでは長編アニメーション映画を制作しています。タイトルと公開時期はまだ未定ですが、「秒速５センチメートル」のメインスタッフが再集結して奮闘している最中です。
I’m now working with my staff on a new full length anime movie. We have not announced on the title and release date, but we are working hard to produce something which is better than 5cm per second.

内容はまだ詳しくはお伝えできませんが、少女が主人公の、冒険ありアクションあり恋ありのにぎやかなアニメーション映画です。作品に託したテーマはいくつかありますが、このページを見てくださっているような以前からの観客の皆さんに対して言うならば、過去作品（「ほしのこえ」「雲のむこう、約束の場所」「秒速５センチメートル」）で描いた喪失の、さらにその先を生きて行くにはどうすれば良いのか──そういった問題意識で作っている作品でもあります。同時に、あまり難しいことを考えずとも若い観客にも楽しく観ていただけるアニメーションを目指してもいます。

Unfortunately, we are unable to reveal the plot. Just to share a little, the plot revolves around a girl and the story is full of adventure, action, and romance. It would also share our perspectives on how we should face life after a great loss just like our previous productions. At the same time, we’re working hard to make it a fun entertaining movie for everyone.

いずれ公式サイトが立ち上がり、その中で詳しい情報をお伝えしていけるようになると思いますが、そういう状態になるまではもうすこし時間がかかりそうです。作品公開のその日まで、どうか楽しみにお待ちいただけると嬉しいです。

He’s one of my favorite anime director next to Hayao Miyazaki and Mamoru Hosoda, and his art style is just too beautiful. Can’t wait for his new work to be released!
