One Piece Strong World Earns 4 Billion Yen on Launch Day

Submitted by Alafista on Monday, 14 December 20092 Comments

One Piece Strong World is the latest anime movie in the One Piece anime franchise and it had managed to perform extremely well on its first day of launch at the cinema, bringing in more than 4 billion yen.

The movie is being shown at 188 cinemas in Japan, which is a lower number of theatres compared to previous releases and other franchise under Toei. For instance, the previous One Piece movie, Episode of Chopper Plus: Bloom in the Winter, Miracle Sakura, opened in 293 theatres but earned only 1 billion. The recent Kamen Rider VS Dai Shocker opened at 345 cinemas but only managed to bring in 2.47 billion.

Here’s a youtube clip showing the insane queue outside one cinema in Shibuya:

I’m guessing the popularity has something to do with the fact that this is the first movie that Eiichiro Oda personally wrote in celebration of the tenth anniversary of the anime series. Which is probably why every single One Piece fans out there is catching it on the big screen.
