We have seen losta Japanese news regarding phone scams regarding kidnapping, but this is the first time I heard someone faking his own kidnapping and demanding ransom from his own mother. A 31-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly phoned his mother claiming to be a man who had kidnapped him and demanding a 30 million yen ransom.

Masakazu Morita, an employee at a waste collection business, called his 66-year-old mother at around 2 a.m. Sunday morning, pretending to be a man who had kidnapped her son, and demanded that she transfer 30 million yen to his company.
His mother has filed a missing person’s report on Saturday after Masakazu did not come home Friday night. After she received the ransom call, she called the police informing them of the demand.
She also added that she thought the man sounded like her son at one point, and that her son was being held in Gifu City.
Gifu police spent five hours searching for Masakazu before finding him in his car parked near a river. Police said he has admitted to making the ransom, telling them he did it because he thought his misappropriation of company funds was about to be discovered, and because he wanted to cause some trouble for the company.

Well Masa-chan if you were indeed one day truly kidnapped, your mom would just hang up on the kidnappers’ phone call.
