Disable Man Receives 11 Million Yen After Police Shot Him

Submitted by Alafista on Friday, 29 May 20099 Comments

We all know that guns are dangerous. Here’s a news story of a policeman who was too trigger-happy and ended up costing the prefecture more than 11 million yen in damages for shooting an innocent man and putting him in a wheelchair for life.

The Yokohama District Court ruled that the shooting of a man by a Kanagawa Prefectural Police officer during questioning was illegal and ordered the Kanagawa Prefectural Government to pay some 11.54 million yen in damages to the victim.

The 31-year-old man from Yokohama had his lower body paralyzed and became wheelchair-bound due to injuries caused by the shooting. He had sought about 80 million yen in compensation.

The man was suspected by the police officer to have robbed a vending machine. After the man tried to flee the scene in his car, a police sergeant from Yokosuka Police Station fired a shot aiming at the man’s right shoulder.

The bullet, however, penetrated the man’s right side, settling in the left of his back. The man eventually became wheelchair-bound.

The prefectural government defended the officer’s actions: “The policeman gave warning by raising a gun, but the man ignored it and tried to crash into a police car. It could not have been helped that the policeman did not fire a warning shot.”

Hmmm 11 million yen wouldn’t last long. Whats gonna happen to the man after he finish using all that money, he wouldn’t be able to rob anymore vending machines in his wheelchair.
