Oricon: Most Wanted Live-Action Movie Adaptation Form Manga

Submitted by Alafista on Monday, 4 May 20095 Comments

Hollywood has been hungrily adapting popular Japanese manga and anime into movies such as the upcoming Cowboy Bebop and Akira and the recently screened Dragonball. So Oricon went out and surveyed 900 men and women: “Which manga they would most like to see being adapted into a live-action movie.”

Here are the results of the poll:

  1. Slam Dunk
  2. One Piece
  3. Kimi ni Todoke
  4. Bokura ga Ita
  5. MONSTER
  6. Gintama
  7. Ouran High School Host Club
  8. Tenshi Nanka Janai
  9. Fullmetal Alchemist
  10. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure

I thought there were a couple of lovely titles on the list. Slam Dunk and MONSTER are definitely good materials for a live-action movie or drama. But somehow I though One Piece is just too epic to be adapted for the big screen. I don’t think there isn’t any director skillful enough on this earth to be able to create a series of movie for it.

I love to see many of the anime to be made into live action movie. But my great fear is many of these great series will be made into trash. A very good example is Dragon Ball. Hollwood has a habit of taking a great story and removing it heart.

  • One Piece = NO (just no)

Monster = NO (Monster would be impossible to make into a good movie, because of the fact that every episode ends with a cliffhanger or a BAM moment, and if it were in a movie, all of these moments would be gone.)

You know what? No to all. If it’s a short series/manga, then ok, but these would all have to be made into like 60 thousand separate movies.

Ouran is the only one on that list that I both know and wouldn’t mind seeing a live action version of, but then, I feel like almost all slice of life shoujo is very suitable for adaptation. Japan proves me right with Nodame Cantabile, NANA, Love*Com, etc.

I don’t like live-action adaptations. Anime is fine as anime.
