Manichi Japan has a lovely feature on the “Ekiben of the Year”. The award is given by The Gransta, a shopping facility on the first basement floor of JR Tokyo Station, and it ranks the most popular ekiben based on sales figures between April 2008 and February 2009.
The winner of the award is this delicious looking “Gyuniku bento” (a box of rice with sukiyak) from Asakusa Imahan, that retails for 1,050 yen.

Second place goes to “Hirekatsu to tamago no poketto sando” (a box of pork fillet cutlet and egg sandwiches) from Tonkatsu Maisen, and retails for just 470 yen.

Third place is awarded to “Kaisendon” (a bowl of rice topped with seafood) from Tsukiji Takewaka, and retails for 1,200 yen.

Fourth place is given to this gorgeous looking “Gin no suzu makunouchi bento — Nihonbashi — Ginmaku” (a box of rice and a variety of side dishes), from Ekibenya Kiwami and retails for 1,800 yen.

And lastly, fifth place is given to “Gapao” (a bowl of rice topped with stir-fried ground pork and egg, seasoned with basil) from mango tree deli, and retails for 800 yen.
