Blue Dragon Plus Review

The good folks at Rocket XL passed me a copy of the Nintendo DS game Blue Dragon Plus,   which was released by Ignition Entertainment. I took a couple of days to run through the game and I thought it was a pretty interesting real-time strategy RPG for Nintendo DS.

Blue Dragon Plus is actually a sequel to the Blue Dragon RPG which was only released on Xbox 360 back in 2007. Therefore, I didn’t have much idea of the prequel story.

The storyline is pretty standard as a RPG, having a anime hero named Shu who attempts to save the world with his friends. And like all anime stories, there are sudden twist where your trusted comrades turn against you. While the story is pretty standard, the cut scenes between missions looks great on the Nintendo DS and is the key factor that makes this game stand out.

Comabt is real time and characters are controlled with the stylus. Its really fun to manage multiple characters on the map until they start to block each others’ path. I got quite irritated once or twice because somehow my healers decided to rush infront next to the boss instead of standing behind the line of fire.

Combat is quite easy with characters automatically attacking enemies that are near them with physical attack. To deal more damage, you would have to utilise the Shadow powers. Shadow powers are quite a cool concept in the game because they are similar to summons where huge spirits will appear to unleash their destructive powers on the enemies in the battlefield. The protagonist, Shu’s Shadow powers is a blue dragon, and hence the title of the game.

In between the missons, there are tons of sidequest to engage the you so that the game does not become boring. Overall I did enjoy the game and would recommend it to you folks as well. ^^
