Japan To Ban Cellphones In School

Submitted by Alafista on Tuesday, 20 January 20099 Comments

Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology has decided that students should generally be banned from bringing mobile phones to school or using them at school. The ministry is set to inform schools and local education boards of its stance as early as this month.

The ministry is carrying out a national survey on rules, the results of which are due to be compiled this month.

Many elementary and junior high schools implement restrictions on bringing cell phones to school, but regulations vary among education boards in cities, towns and villages.

The Osaka, Saitama and Kagawa prefectural governments have already announced a policy of banning students from bringing cell phones to elementary and junior high schools in principle.

Its really troublesome not to be able to bring a cellphone to school. How are the students going to contact their friends or parents then?

There was a time when we ourselves did not use cellphones. I think it builds social cohesion above everything.

Yeah, I spent most of my life without cellphones and I still managed somehow. :D (Not that I’d appreciate it if someone tried to take it away now, but I think I’d survive.)

i hate my fone, i was disconnected because i havent put credit on it for 6 months…

Cellphones aren’t allowed in the UK so i just assumed that people in Japan did what we did and just took them in anyway and used them around classes.

in my school a middle school were alowed to bring our phone but we have to put then away and leave them in our lockers when class starts. then when schools over we can takem out and call our perants/rides home and all our friends then

The highschool I went to (in NZ) didn’t allow phones in class. Students generally get them out and txt/play games if they get bored. Hell, that’s what I do in university lectures :P

Sure it’s inconvenient for students not to have them, but from an educational standpoint, they’re probably better off banned at junior high and elementary. There’s also the problem of elementary school children being given expensive phones but not being mature enough to look after them. The school has problems when they get stolen/lost.

  • [...] seems that Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology doesn’t want students to have their phones at school anymore. They will be handing their decision down to schools and school boards as early as this [...]

at my high school we can have are phones on us but we’re not allowed to use them but that doesn’t stop anyone. seriously if i got to the girls bathroom in the middle of class there is always at least 2 girls talking to some one -_- i got board one time so i went to every bathroom (i was board!) not a single 1 didn’t have some one talking. in fact just 1 bathroom had 9 girls in it. just to make fun of them i said “hi Mrs. Mowsers” (principal from hell) when i walked out. i heard 3 screams and some one dropped their phone. LMAO!

so i personally think that sSubySs has a good system at school. i would really like it if my school had lockers. that way i wouldn’t have 3 notebooks, 4 binders, 5 reading books, my planer, and 2 miny notecard binders (those things are actually pretty cool) all crammed into my backpack. (and my friends wonder why i hide painkillers in my wallet >.<)
