Old Otakus
Can you imagine yourself growing old with white hair and still being an otaku? Well, I spotted this tiny piece of news on DannyChoo whereby this 50 year old man is picking up some moe-licious magazines.

And he is standing in the above 18 adult section. Somehow when you are old, I would think that people would give you weird stares that you are some old hentai ji ji. LOL

So how long do you expect yourself to be an otaku? Well I’m planning to live in Japan by the age of 30, somehow I don’t see myself hopping around Akiba when I turn 40. LOL

I see no reason to stop being involved in something I like do to age. Hobbies are important to people’s lives and shouldn’t be readily thrown away. Lots of old guys are into sports, cars, golf, etc- while I suppose its a bit humorous to see an old guy pursuing the otaku lifestyle, there is nothing wrong with it at all. Personally I have respect for those who don’t let age or what “seems weird” define what they want to do.
I got my parents into anime about 5 years ago, and they have been involved with it ever since. Watching anime is something my family does almost every evening, and my mom and I like to go read manga at Barnes and Noble. We all go to conventions, and my mom has been known to cosplay. My dad (55 years) is that “old guy looking at the DVDs”, but everyone seems cool with it, and I’m glad they have something they really enjoy enjoying, since 95% of their day is working.
If the companies release GOOD anime stuff by the time I reach 50 and beyond, I see myself on your next post alafista. I am on my mid thirties and still looking for anime. I still have to watch many anime series and guess it will take my entire lifetime to watch those and I hope I can visit Akiba as well.
by the time im old anime will all be CG….i HATE CG….>HATE! so i will be an oldschool otaku
Younger people always think that there’ll feel different when their older but you don’t. This year i turned 30 and i don’t feel any different then i did last year, five years ago or even 10 years ago. I’m still me.
However, as people age, it becomes harder and harder to learn new things. So chances are at 50 most anime fans will be still be fans but only of shows that aired in their teens - 30’s and we wouldn’t see them buying the latest goods. To get serious, I’ve read studies that have said that excerising the brain by constantly giving it new stimulus helps lower the risk of alzheimer’s.
Hey, I’m 40 and I still watch this stuff. I’m from the USA and have been an anime fan since 1980! (there are not many here who can go back that far). I supposed that if I’m still addicted to it after 25 years, it won’t be something that I’ll drop in favor of bingo and shuffleboard later on.
When I’m old and dead, you can put little Rei Ayanami statues on my grave site.
When I read this the first thing I thought of was grumpy jiisan. ^^ http://www.youtube.com/GrumpyJiisan
I bet if I’m still into anime in my 40’s I’m going to be one of those “Back in my day, we didn’t have this *insert new anime fad* crud! How could you kids not know what Haruhi is!? Raaawrg!”
@ BakaTanuki: I agree, its great if you have a passion to maintain a hobby for life.
@ Toonleap: LOL I wonder if by the time you reach 50, whether this website will still be around.
@ Dee: Maybe anime will go back into old school hand-drawn art. A revival or revolution.
@ thenullset: Our generation won’t get Alzhemiers cause everyone would be excercising their brains by playing MMORPGs. LOL
@ Duke of Yashima: Awesome! I hope I can be like you still passionately watching anime after another 10 years.
@ Coco the Bean: LOL Somehow I picture old otakus like you just grumpy and angry and always ranting about the good ol days. LOL
@Duke of Yashima = im 17, i watched anime since i was born, (thats not a lie hehheh, my father got all the manga entertainment vids and all those other odd companies who sold “under the counter” animation from that “perverse japan”) and im a big fan of the older anime so, even tho im not as old as u, i still have a hefty amount of notches in my belt in terms of age of the anime ive enjoyed (gotta love legend of the four kings/legend of the dragon kings). i feel like an oldfag of anime even tho im 17 >M<
@Dee - wow, you’re 17 and you’ve seen the Dragon Kings? I suppose you’ve also watched Legend of the Galactic Heroes, too?
I have a 16-year old daughter who always gets a little frustrated when dad tries to push on her “Golden Age” anime like Orange Road or Cityhunter. She’s spoiled on the newer stuff, where production qualties are very good, but the stories largely stink (with a few exceptions). At least she’s seen EVA, which is sort of mandatory in my house.
