Here’s another interesting poll conducted that Oricon that is anime-related. They asked 900 men and women “Who is the ideal anime buddy who will always comes to the rescue when they’re in a pinch”.
The trust robotic cat Doraemon tops the list as he always provides solution from his wonderful pocket.

Looks like a pretty good list to me. If I’m facing daily simple problems, I’d probably go with Doraemon as well, but if I’m fighting a duel to the death, Luffy and Goku are definitely the ones I’d choose to back me up.

Haruhi to the rescue? …Well, I suppose there’s a difference between “coming to the rescue” and “executing a successful rescue without dragging anyone into further trouble and/or warping the fabric of the universe”.
For me I’d imagine a magical girl-type heroine would work well (see: Sakura Kinomoto, Amu Hinamori, etc.), as they always tend to stand up for what is right and what they believe in, no matter the odds or consequences. Also, they tend to be comfortably overpowered too.
