60% Japanese Married Individuals Still Sponge Off Parents

Are you still living off your parents? According to a recent survey by Nihon University Population Research Institute, about 60% of Japanese married individuals have still received financial support from their parents or their spouse’s parents over the past year.

Whats surprising about this survey is that more than half of married people in their 50s (51.2 percent) said they were financially supported by their parents or their spouse’s parents.

Naohiro Ogawa, head of the research institute offers an explaination:

“Once you reach your 50s, your income peaks out, while you have more expenses for ceremonial occasions such as weddings or funerals. Therefore, many people turn to their parents — who have income from pensions and investments — for financial support”.

According to the survey, couples in their 20s received the most financial support from their parents, at 65.8 percent, while more than half of couples aged between their 30s and 50s also received economic assistance from their parents.

Overall, 56.1 percent said they were financially supported by their parents or their spouse’s parents. As to the amount of money they received, 64.3 percent said they received less than 120,000 yen a year, while 11.3 percent said they received more than 600,000 yen a year. The money included monetary gifts for celebratory occasions and traditional New Year cash gifts.

Meanwhile, only 36.6 percent of the respondents said they gave economic assistance to their parents or their spouse’s parents.

I hope to make enough to give back to my parents a portion of what they have given me.

My parents love me very much, but I somehow get the funny feeling that part of that love includes knowing that I am a financial investment to aid in their future retirement. :P So like frog212, I plan to be giving back to my parents some of the money I make, at least while they’re still working themselves and paying off debt.

But I plan to be in a well-paying job and not live so lavishly as to need extra support. But I suppose those kinds of ceremonies are important…

If they still have their own hands and legs, they can support themselves. Well but financially-wise,one should provide them until they’re old. But as to doing things, like helping out with chores, its a must for the parents to do, because they’ll be bored! =X
