Oricon Poll: Japan’s Favorite Manga Artist

Marketing research firm Oricon has posted their poll results on who is Japan’s favorite manga artists.

The 2008 poll was conducted during February 12-15 over the Internet with 600 panelists, evenly divided by gender and three age ranges: teenagers, people in their 20s, and people in their 30s.

Here’s the overall result of the poll:

Ai Yazawa

Akira Toriyama

Takehiko Inoue

Mitsuru Adachi

Yoshihiro Togashi

Eiichiro Oda

Naoki Urasawa

08. CLAMP

Fujiko Fujio

Osamu Tezuka

Here are the results of the male voters:

Akira Toriyama

Mitsuru Adachi

Takehiko Inoue

Yoshihiro Togashi

Eiichiro Oda

Here’s the result of the female voters:

Ai Yazawa

Takehiko Inoue

03. CLAMP

Arina Tanemura

Moyoco Anno

After the breakdown, you can see that the male and female readers prefer different artist all together. I think the female readers prefer artist’s design and artwork while the male readers are more focused on an epic storyline. So who are your own top 5 manga artist? I think mine would be #1 尾田栄一郎 Eiichiro Oda, #2 CLAMP and #3 浦沢直樹 Naoki Urasawa.

Digg!

hmm… adachi #2 &#4 in male voters? :P. anyways, some of ‘em aren’t that big of a surprise especially the male voters. i wouldn’t say their choice is based on ‘epic’ storyline since Toriyama’s biggest work is his Dragon Ball manga, and the storyline wasn’t very ‘epic’ IMO. I personally think that their choices is due to popularity during it’s run. Since most of ‘em drew/draw in the ever popular Shonen Jump. Being a Toriyama fan myself, I also pick him as #1. Despite his good-to-meh storytelling. HIs art is unrivaled IMO. Attention to detail on character clothes, backgrounds, vehicles is unmatched. Of all the shonen type artists who draw fights, I still haven’t seen anyone draw fights as fluidly as Toriyama.
Here’s my list of top 5 (though I have a top 20 list):
    1. Akira Toriyama
    2. Yoshiyuki Sadamoto
    3. Oh!Great/Ogure Ito
    4. Nobuhiro Watsuki
    5. Eiichiro Oda
