Japanese Women Dislike Applying Make-up on Trains

Submitted by Alafista on Saturday, 1 March 20083 Comments

Most women strongly dislike putting on make-up on the trains, but do so anyway because they don’t want to waste the time they spend commuting.

Aki Hoshino

Since I can’t find a photo of a women putting on make-up in a train, I thought I just post this photo of Aki Hoshino by the tracks instead.

According to results of a study by the Pola Research Institute of Beauty and Culture, only 19 percent of women still did their face while commuting, especially those in their 20s. The most common group were those in their late 20s, where 43 percent had used make-up on a train, with 34 percent in their early 20s the next most frequent demographic. Less than 10 percent of those 40 or older had fixed their cosmetics on the train.

In another recent survey by the Japan Private Railways Association, female commuters commented that “they smell unpleasant,” “it’s an eyesore” and “even though I’m a woman myself, I find the practice disturbing.”

I’m glad I’m not a women. All I have to do before leaving the house is to style my hair which takes less than 5 mins.

Nonetheless, I still don’t think its there should be anything wrong with applying make-up on the train. Unless the women look horrifying without make-up on. Then she should not leave the house before applying make-up.
