Nobuo Uematsu: Mario Theme As Japanese Anthem?

Japan’s national anthem is the “Kimi ga Yo 君が代”, but critics have always attacked the controversial line “May the Emperor’s reign last forever”, saying that it is a symbol of imperialism.

In 1up’s recent feature interview with Nobuo Uematsu, the legendary video game music composer jokingly mentioned:

I’m sure everyone in the world — no borderlines or age limit — everyone in the world who’s come across Super Mario’s music will never forget that melody… I think that the Super Mario song should be the national anthem for Japan. [Hums the death refrain] So when someone wins a gold medal at the Olympics, a Japanese athlete, the flag should go up with the theme song. Shoop! …The world would have a different image of Japan if we use that.

LOL now that I got the image of the mario song playing in my head, I just can’t stop laughing.

So apart from the mario theme, what other theme songs do you think would be suitable substitute for the Japanese anthem? Alot of people seems to be saying the Zelda theme is a good option too.

I’d say the Zelda Theme has the gravitas to be the national anthem more than the Mario theme, and I would TOTALLY love Japan forever if they used it.

If they don’t, I’ll have to use it myself when I take over my own small Island nation to reign as dictator and God-King.

Zelda theme sound more suitable for a anthem imo ^^
It is such impressing when played buy a full orchestra. But maybe too heroic…
