Akira Movie Set in “New Manhatten”

Finally official information has been released on the Akira live-action adaptation Warner Brothers and Leonardo DiCaprio.

As I’ve earlier reported, Ruairi Robinson is going to direct the movie. The adaptation will be done in two live-action films, where each film will cover three volumes of the manga.

For those that have seen the movie, and thought it was awesome. You should read the manga which was a true masterpiece.

But here’s the irritating bit even before they start filming, they have “moved” the action to:

“New Manhattan,” a city rebuilt by Japanese money.

What is wrong with these nincompoops? How can Neo-Tokyo be simply changed into “New Manhatten”. I feel that its just insulting to the original creators.

So how many of you have actually watched Akira? And what do you think of this live-action adaptation?

Its hard to find a rewrite that doesn’t just tear up the source content. Look at I am Legend and I, Robot.

  2. Hinano says:

LOL I wonder where they’re filming it – I’m in Manhattan every day!

  3. Dsm says:

Akira Toriyama is rolling in his grave…

  4. nooneofconsequence says:

Considering the original Akira movie is one of the single most overrated anime of all time, I don’t see how a Westernized version would be all that bad. The manga wasn’t all that bad. At least Hollywood is giving those six massive volumes two movies and are at least exhibiting a sense of planning, unlike their Japanese counterparts in the 80s.

I-HATE-THE-AMERICAN-FILM-INDUSTRY. i was exited about the neon genesis live action movies because weta-workshop were working on it but WTF is new manhatten?!?!

sorry to fill this blog with hate but dammit its really annoyed me……… this brings me to naruto’s american voice ACTRESS, now im aware that the japanese actress was indeed female but cmawn since when was naruto THAT anoying im “BELEIVE IT” no, no i dont beleive it!……..

  6. McKlain says:

Akira Toriyama maybe rolling in his grave because of the Dragon Ball movie. This thing will make Katsuhiro Otomo roll on his grave.

This movie is gonna suck big time, my friends.

  7. Alafista says:

@ Hinano: maybe you can try and audition for the role as a passerby or somthing haha

    @ Dsm: why akira toriayama?

@ nooneofconsequence: I don’t think akira(film) is that overrated, it was Akira very popular just because it was ahead of time in the industry. But the manga is just awesome.

    @ Dee: RAWR!

@ McKlain: Yep thats right. Akira Toriyama – Dragon ball, Katsuhiro Otomo – Akira. But they wun be rolling in their graves cause they are still well and live, they are only around mid 50s.

    “Rebuilt by Japanese money”

I think they need to be reminded that this isn’t 1987 any more…

    rawr =)

I really hope it never gets done. I think that if it is done it should be set in Japan with Japanese actors. First we get Tom ( I am a Psycho) Cruise doing Last Samurai and now Leo in Akira. It just like the 30′s and 40′s when US movies were made with white men in makeup like Peter Lorrie in makeup as Mr. Moto. How insulting. I think all Japanese and all Americans who respect the Japanese people should boycott Warner until they give back the option at a loss or agree to a Japanese version only. The US version of Grudge, Ring and other “westernized” movies all sucked.

The original Akira movie was a true masterpiece, visually stunning even by todays standards with an excellent and original story to boot. I am excited by the new movies but feel as many people do that they will be let down for a multitude of reasons

Neo Tokyo CANNOT be recreated as New Manhattan, what were they thinking, it’s a Bl@ody insult !!!

  12. kawoief says:

aren’t the leads in the story all japanese teens? none of these actors seem to be asian or seem to be in high school. i thought the point of akira was what it means to be growing up. and if the lead female is the youngest cast member… then…wow…sure look forward to this

  13. Coaltar says:

Shit you can already tell there gonna fuck it up!!

  14. Jonson Shine says:

I think they can make this work, and to be honest they have to if they’re doing two movies, you’re always going to get naysayers but i’m quite confident this can be everything it should be. I think Leo and co did an excellent job when they remade infernal affairs so I’m excited to watch it, Akira was one of my favourite films when I was younger, though i’ve now watched it just a little too much. Can’t wait to see a different take on it.

  16. hahaha says:

I am so friggin frustrated with the leeching of Asian cinema from the American movie machine! They’ve already butchered and destroyed many a great Asian extreme horror film and now they’re going after Anime! Dragon Ball Z is already a massive disappointment and that is just from watching the trailer! Now Akira? Rumor has it that Battle Royale is also in the works! I don’t even want to know how they’re going to ruin taht for me! As an American who loves Asian cinema, nime and Maga, I am really disappointed at the lack of creativity that exsists in the states. So they go hunting great pieces of work elsewhere and F it up! How embarrassing!
