Videogames Console War [1990-2007]

Videogame console has been an important part of my life growing up as a kid and even now. Here’s a really cool video on youtube that showcases how the world market share has evolved over 1990-2007.

Videogames Console War [1990-2007]

Here are the color markers for the different companies

  • Blue: Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE)
  • Red: Nintendo
  • Green: Microsoft
  • Purple: Sega
  • Yellow: Bandai
  • White: Others

Its really cool to see how Sega get gobble up in the early stages and then Sony starts to dominate until Nintendo comes back in as the leader again.

So how many consoles have you owned so far?

Edit: I forgot to share what console I’ve owned. I’ve had NES, SNES, Sega Saturn, PS1, PS2

Digg!

It’s pretty amazing how it took the GameBoy for Nintendo to maintain the majority in overall market share.

And it’s absolutely shocking how quickly the PlayStation rose into market domination.

The greatest epic part of it was 2007 for Nintendo, when they absolutely dominated the industry. Nice find :D

Every system I’ve owned is a Nintendo system.

NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GC, DS, Wii. 360 and PS3 someday.

Well lest see I’ve owned a NES, SNES, N64, GB, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox360. I most likely pick up a PS3 later this year. The hard part is trying to have three game systems hooked up to the same TV.

What gets me is with all the press MS is getting when you look at it in shear numbers they are an also ran.

    @Geek

For less than $20 at your local Walmart/Best Buy/Radio Shack you can get a component selector where you can easily hook up three consoles to your TV. If you want to go higher definition for under $600 you can pick up a decent A/V receiver from a company like Pioneer, Onkyo, or Yamaha that can output in a format like HDMI or Component.

I wouldn’t exactly call MS an “also ran”. They are a solid second this console gen, and would have been the leader if the Wii never took off.

Back on topic, consoles I have owned include Atari 7800, NES, Atari Lynx, PS1, Dreamcast, GBA, PS2, Xbox, Xbox360, and FC Twin (NES and SNES clone).

@ The Geek: I’m waiting for MGS4 to be released then I will go buy my PS3

@ IcyStorm: seems like you are an big fan of Nintendo

Just got to ask, is this for the Japanese market only because I would have thought Microsoft to have a far higher global presence.

let me use a movie to put across a point about the sudden dominance of the playstation, the film is hulk (ino it sucks, thats the point) there was HUGE hype for the hulk, everyone thaught it was gonna be amazing so when it was released, millions of people went to see it so it topped box office charts, but the film itself was absolutly rubbish and noone liked it………see the connection im making here? (sorry if i upset any sony fanboys ….well maybe im not sorry….ohwell) weve pretty much owned every console at my house except dreamcast, x-box and ps3. we wont get a ps3 because……whats the point? if youve got a wii and an xbox 360 youve got practically got one….

our xbox 360 has been sent off to microsoft cause of red ring of death (our first ring, when will the next be?? =P) and i dont miss it in the least…..
