Going with the whole Alice in Wonderland / Through The Looking Glass theme I think the “worm” is actually a caterpillar which would be very appropriate.

It’s not a worm, it’s a caterpillar, complete with hookah. From the book (there was a cat, too — Alice’s pet Diana — but she was not actually in Wonderland).
