Origin of Japan’s Schoolgirl Sailor Uniforms

I’m sure many of us are aware that the Sailor Uniforms or better known as Seifuku has become an icon of the popular culture of Japan. It has been such an icon that now there are 2 schools claiming to be the pioneer of the design.

The 2 schools involved in this controversy are respectively Fukuoka Jo Gakuin and Heian Jogakuin St Agnes School.

Before we proceed further, lets have a look at their respective uniforms back then.
(Heian Jogakuin St Agnes School on the left and Fukuoka Jo Gakuin on the right)

Up until now, Fukuoka Jo Gakuin, which introduced sailor outfits in 1921, was thought to be the origin of the uniforms. However, Heian Jogakuin St Agnes School, located in Kyoto, says it introduced sailor uniforms in 1920.

If you asked me, I would definitely say that the design of today’s seifuku are based on the Fukuoka Jo Gakuin’s uniforms.

As for those countries that don’t have them, I guess the only solution is to go to Akihabara and buy a seifuku which was recently discussed by DannyChoo.

Since we are on the topic of sailor uniforms, would you want schools in your countries to adopt them? I certainly would support it if the educational minister ever decides to. ^_^

In the picture on the right, I think the girl on the left is wanting the girl on the right to tie her collar neatly for her.

I saw that in the news and wondered what Heian Jogakuen was thinking. They may have had the first western-style clothing, but Fukuoka Jogakuen’s looks way more like what they use today.

I don’t want seirafuku to come to my country. The top looks scratchy and annoying, really starchy or something.
