Axe Girl Updates - Manga Believed to be Influence
Here’s a little update from on the school girl that axed her father. At the moment, prosecutors are recommending that she be tried as an adult because of the premeditated nature and severity of the 16-year-old girl’s crime.

That aside, through the investigation there seems to be certain clues that she might have truly been her methods might have been influenced by anime and manga.
From Mainichi Japan:
The girl graduated from junior high school with the dream of becoming a manga artist. In the detention center cells at Tanabe Police Station where she was being held until Friday, the girl was polite to police officers and her elders. She has also eaten the meals served up to her. When she is not being questioned about the case, she spends most of her time in the cell reading manga, the source said.
From Yomiyuri Online:
犯行直å‰ã«é»’ã„ワンピースã«ç€æ›¿ãˆãŸã‚Šã€äº‹ä»¶ã®ï¼•æ—¥å‰ã«æ‰‹ãŠã®ã‚’購入ã—ã¦å‡¶å™¨ã«ç”¨ã„ãŸã‚Šã—ãŸç‚¹ã«ã¤ã„ã¦ã¯ã€ã‚²ãƒ¼ãƒ やアニメã®å½±éŸ¿ã‚‚ã‚ã£ãŸã¨èª¬æ˜Žã—ãŸã€‚
Briefly Translated: She bought an axe five days before and it was said that game and anime were an influence.
Edit: The main reason why the schoolgirl hacked her father to death was because of his numerous extramarital affair. Therefore, she accumulated a lot of hatred which unfortunately ended up in the murder.
This is certainly a sad incident and I feel sorry for her and her father as well. Well I hope no similar incidents would happen in future. There’s too much brutal murders by sons and daughters this year.

Its really annoying how people rather put blame on inanimate objects than face the true problem, which is quite obviously the parent and child relationship. Its like the media is trying to convince you that if someone killed someone with a scalpel and they wanted to be a doctor, being a doctor influences you to kill people -_-.
Maybe manga gave her to idea to kill with a axe, but so what? The intention to kill is already there, at most you can only prove her “method” was influenced by something she saw. Maybe if she saw the Matrix she would’ve used a gun, or a movie set in the Feudal Era then she would’ve used a sword? Does that change the crime or the criminal’s motive?
@Majest: thanks for framing the whole picture more objectively. I realised that even my post might have given people the wrong impression that manga and game were the main reason. Basically it was the numerous extramarital affair that her father had.
Nonetheless, we could still argue that with all the numerous violence that we see on TV, anime, games nowadays, it could have influenced her into thinking “I could end it all with violence”.
Well the media love to home in on a certain selling point, so its unavoidable that they would exploit the fact that she was a aspiring manga fan and then try to create some stir.
Just suddenly had a few more thoughts so excuse me while I rant a little more just this once XD
It is also with great irony that this case as a whole demonstrated the effect media has on society on a more subtle level. As I recall there were subsequent similar murders, after this particular incident. Which likely stemmed from the news sources and various media that blew this whole case out of proportion and caused such a great stir among parts of the community. I think this showcases how news which are becoming more and more “Sensational” and less objective that it has become the main influence on the actions of society in our time.
(Hypothetically, in similar reasoning, if anime was charged with causing violence, I would totally charge the mass media for the blame of the subsequent murders.)
Anyways back to the topic, I just hope this doesn’t have any long term effects on the industry and that they can close the case already.
Also, you have a nice blog~
i think there are lots of sources of violence and sex, but it just so happen that the girl likes manga. to me, anime and manga is just a hobby, and it isn’t something that it will be an influence! people who watch shows, that involved sex jokes, will be more exposed. are we saying that such shows do not contribute to the rocketing sex and abortions in every country? I think these shows have. and why hasn’t the media reported of such thing? is it because abortion is such a small thing? abortion is killing a life too. But the media always tends to look away at these type of things because they are too minor for them to mention.
well my thoughts on this is that…. its up to us whether we want to let such shows influence us. this is our life afterall. and i am quite mad about the fact that everyone is pointing to the anime industry on the crimes that are being committed =(
Yeah, Majest brought up a good point. If the media didn’t report about the axe-murder, the possibility of having the copycat murder would have probably dropped to 0. We all love to displace the blame onto someone else or something else - so happens that anime/manga is the scapegoat.
The whole idea of that girl wanting to be a mangaka = heyshe’sgoingtokillpeople is ludicrous! I mean, I don’t see Rumiko Takahashi killing people with huge swords or Ken Akamatsu running around being a sexual deviant?
Well, if the media wanted so much to (pretend to) be outraged about something connected with the murder they should have condemned extramarital affairs, not anime or manga. But then again, that’s media, so you can’t expect much logical thinking.
“Nonetheless, we could still argue that with all the numerous violence that we see on TV, anime, games nowadays, it could have influenced her into thinking “I could end it all with violenceâ€.”
One could argue that, true…until he remembers that violence wasn’t exactly discovered after the invention of movies or TV. And of course, if violence on TV is to be condemened, we shoudl start with prime tiem news bulletins which everyone watches, not late night obscure anime shows.
Blame the anime industry while overlooking the real issue…god, it never ends, eh?
ok why blame manga/anime/games when kids who are intersted in it kill she obviously had motive AFFAIRS id do the same thing if i was her just for the fact that i hated him if it wernt for the fact my dad is dead i might be in the same boat as her but manga wouldnt be the cause thats like saying the only reason rapists kill is because these criminal shows say they should or that porn is to blame if the adults of the world read manga and watched anime then they would realise its fun and dosnt infulence us(apart from the menatly retarded and stupid people) in any way
